Fast Slow Disco, FOYER-LA’s current project, takes its title from a St. Vincent song that features the lyric, “I’m so glad I came but I can’t wait to leave.” The viscosity of our re-entry has a sense of presence and a sense of absence- it is filled with readiness, but has little momentum. At times it seems we are watching our lives rather than living them. The works of nine artists – Sarah Bedford, Domingo Castillo, Travis Fairclough, Andy Harman, Patrick Lakey, Lecia Dole Recio, Lyndsey Marko, Cynthia Phillips, M. Sharkey – explore this state of stasis. In their work they compress actual and illusionistic spaces, imply landscapes with transformative possibilities or share moments that have been either missed or are about to be had. These internal frictions are a state of suspended fragility – the best response may be to keep dancing.
